This stage of the work was completed in October. Some of the Nov/Dec volunteers completed the painting during their visit and moved stacks of hardcore to the swampy area near the entrance. Still awaiting delivery of the reinforced parts of the night dens. Will be fantastic to see those bears out of their cages. Would be good if there were a few hammocks in their as one of them loves to hang around on a rope.

I was a volunteer when the main wall was being built through Doris' enclosure. The progress looks fantastic! It would be great to watch the bears go from their quarantine cages to their new outdoor enclosure. Does anyone have an estimated time frame for when the construction will be complete and the sun bears get to move in?

Hello everyone! We no longer work at Matang Wildlife Centre :( but we have done a final blog that should be posted soon. I know many of you have been waiting updates keenly.
Great news about the bear release.
We wish all past volunteers a wonderful festive season and please do keep in touch! (carolinebellhouse@hotmail.com is the best)
Cheers,
C and K

Just watching the video's of Doris and Tin Sang's first taste of the 'real' world, Leo's work with the orangutans has confirmed my faith in the possibility of releasing these wonderful creatures back into their true homes. After volunteering at Matang and becoming rather attached, to say the least, to Doris it is moving to watch these guys step into the jungle, their future which is constantly in our hands to conserve. All the best to everyone at Matang.
